Yesterday we covered some of the top reasons to visit Africa’s East Coast so we thought it only fitting to present you with an app which is great for travelling the length of breadth of this wonderful continent.

Therefore, our Travel App of the Week is Star Walk and here we explain why…

One of the great things about visiting Africa – especially on safari – is the huge expanse of brilliant night sky, punctuated by clearly visible stars and constellations. It’s a star gazer’s paradise, offering rare glimpses of the Milky Way in all its majesty, the Southern Cross and even the odd planet or two.

But if, like us, you don’t know your plough from your Pluto, then this award winning Star Walk app is just the ticket. All you have to do is point your smart phone or iPad towards the sky and Star Walk will tell you exactly what you are looking at.

Great for amateur astronomers, the app helps you pinpoint and identify more than 20,000 objects in the night sky so it’s no wonder it won an Apple design award.

Star Walk’s 360-degree, touch control star map shows constellations, stars, planets, satellites and galaxies from anywhere on Earth – impressive stuff and great for holidaying outdoors.

It continues to be developed and is the only star gazing guide of its kind currently on the market. Not only that, but its capable of Twitter integration to reach out and share with the star gazing community and provides a full calendar of Celestial events.

So whether, you’re touring in Africa, hitting the peaks or just camping out in your back yard, don’t leave without Star Walk. May the force be with you!

In our quest for the world’s best travel apps, this week we came across and reviewed Triposo – potentially the most optimised app for mobile we’ve ever encountered.

Created by two former ‘Googlers’, Triposo has more than 8000 destination specific travel guides available to download and is clever enough to be able to make informed suggestions based on its user’s location, the time of day and weather.

It has the capacity to support blogging on the move with its Travel Log feature and means you can publish your itineraries, pictures and highlights and share them with friends quickly and easily on the move.

But just what makes it so special? Well, the answer is that its creators claim to have an algorithmic approach to travel and use sources such as wikitravel and openstreetmap and, as a result, Triposo is surprisingly accurate – on an international scale.

Perhaps the best bit though is that the app doesn’t incur any roaming charges as you don’t even need an internet connection – all the detailed maps are downloaded and stored on your device.

Meanwhile, other useful features include a currency converter, phrase book and activity suggestions based on local attraction opening hours.

But, as always, don’t just take our word for it. Download this cheeky little app for yourself and have fun finding out what it can do.

It’s available free for most mobile devices, including iPhone and Android, and has a neat website too – featuring plenty of travel logs to whet your appetite.

Happy apping!

The verdict… a well deserved honour.

Not only does this app enable you to book flights on the go – from wherever you are and straight from the app – but it has the capacity for you to search flights and statuses based on flight numbers; book extras, such as Speedy Boarding and additional baggage, up to two hours before your flight; manage your bookings, and even add sporting equipment.

It’s available for iPhone and Android – with the option of downloading it to your PC also – and comes in six different languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Dutch.

Even better, scan the QR code here and it’ll immediately download! Not only that, but you’ll find a great video for the app and a sneak peek of the TV campaign.

What’s not to love?

Now go forth and enjoy!

Our latest travel app of the week – Flightradar24 – really appeals to the geek in us and no wonder because it tracks live air traffic.

It means travellers can be the first to know of any delays or whether their trip is running exactly to schedule. But it’s also great for aviation anoraks like us who are just curious about where people are in the world.

To get a flavour of this app and how it works, visit the website , which couldn’t be simpler to use. Just hover over the aircraft symbol for a flight number and voila – you can see on the map exactly where the flight is and watch its progress in real time.

This clever piece of technology also lists flight numbers, types of aircraft, and many other aviation variables, such as speed and altitude, with the ability to see individual aircraft on the map at the touch of a button.

In short, its main features are:

• Ability to see the aircraft moving in real-time
• An augmented reality view with the means to identify planes flying overhead by pointing the phone’s camera to the sky
• Specific flight searches
• Capability to filter by airline, altitude, speed and more
• Flight trails and callsigns shown directly on the map
• Possibility to show different aircraft icons, for different aicraft types
• Images of featured aircraft

Not only that, but the Twitter feed for this app also keeps you up-to-date with delays, diversions and cancellations so you can be ahead of the game before the airport starts handing out its meal vouchers.

Unfortunately, it’s not free but, at around £1.24, it’s well worth the spend and is available for iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch and Android.

With the 2012 Formula 1 Korean Grand Prix kicking off this weekend, MyTravelMoney.co.uk set out to find a really great app for travelling in Asia. That’s when we discovered BuUuk Restaurant & Bar Guide – our travel app of the week.

This clever little app, which is great for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, is the ultimate foodie traveller’s trip companion. Whether you’re looking for food and drink in Singapore, Japan, China, The Phillipines, India, Vietnam or North or South Korea, its real time technology will find it for you.

It covers a whole host of other destinations besides and lets you view comments and reviews, including photos, of local restaurants while on your travels.

Restaurant listings and other data are being updated constantly and there’s even an ‘Offers’ section in which to access deals and discounted food and drink.

On a recent trip to Thailand, we found it incredibly easy to use – and the information accurate to boot. But if you’re still not convinced, let us give you ten reasons why this little gem is an invaluable tool for travelling in Asia:

1) The food and drink scene, particularly in South East Asia, changes incredibly quickly. One week Italian’s hot, the next it’s not. Restaurants can open and close at the drop of a hat according to these trends.

2) Sushi, noodles, Mexican, Muslim, organic, seafood, burgers, tapas, pizza, curry, Cantonese, Kosher, Halal, vegan, and vegetarian are just a few of the popular food types listed.

3) More than 75,000 restaurants, cafes, street markets, wine bars and pubs across the UAE, Asia and Australasia are constantly being updated.

4) The app uses location-based navigation to find food and drink where you are and includes directions on how to get to your chosen restaurant or bar.

5) There’s an active forum on which you can discuss food till your heart’s content.

6) The app can be integrated with both Facebook and Twitter and you can even have ratings and reviews sent directly to your Twitter account.

7) Get reviews and recommendations from peers rather than food critics.

8) The new Augmented Reality feature lets you view locations around you.

9) Restaurants and bars with Wi-Fi are tagged – making it easy to spot one where you can get online.

10) Halal tagging is also added to relevant restaurants and bars – making it easier for those with special dietary requirements to choose a suitable venue.

To buy or download, go to iTunes.

We tweeted earlier about UK business travellers spurning the potential of mobile apps but what about apps for leisure travel?

We decided to investigate some of the best mobile apps on the market and are delighted to say that TripIt is our Travel App of the Week. Want to know why? Read on…

“If you ever travel, you should be using @TripIt (pro if you travel a lot) to keep all your stuff in one spot. Can’t imagine trips without it,” tweeted TripIt follower @ryanfitzgerald recently – and with good reason: he’s right.

We reviewed TripIt and now must confess that it’s become an essential in our daily lives. The thing is, TripIt isn’t only great for travelling abroad. Yes, it has guides covering just about every destination under the sun, from Disney World and the Grand Canyon National Park to the likes of Spain and South Africa, and you can track flights, but it’s also brilliant just for getting from A to B in Britain.

It has the facility to plan driving trips by allowing you to create maps and generate directions, route details and more so you can access online on the move or by printing out before you travel. The online route planner is free and you can combine travel times, flight and hotel details too.

But this app offers so much more than that. As its websites states, TripIt drags travel kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

It has a fantastic online team ready and waiting to answer your queries on Twitter and is incredibly responsive at suggestions for all your techy problems.

Perhaps the best bit about TripIt, however, is that you can combine all your travel plans into a single itinerary which you can then access anywhere in the world.

Check out the website for more features but we rate it our Travel App of the Week – great for both leisure and business travellers.
