Today we pay tribute to our friends down under as it’s ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) Day – the anniversary of when Australia and New Zealand troops landed on Turkey’s Gallipoli Peninsula on April 25, 1915 at the height of World War I.

The event celebrates the bravery of ANZAC personnel who took part in the exercise and commemorates the lives which were sadly lost.

Not only is it a public holiday and day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand, as well as the Cook Islands, Niue, Samoa and Tonga, it’s celebrated in many other parts of the world, such as the UK, France, Turkey, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Canada, the US and even Hawaii.

Check out our guide below for more information on ANZAC Day around the world and how you can celebrate too:

ANZAC Day – why was April 25, 1915 so important?

April 25, 1915 was the date that British and French forces, as well as those from the British Empire, including Australia and New Zealand, landed on the Gallipoli in a bid to open up new fronts for their allies, as well as a feasible trade route to Russia.
The mission to establish a trade route failed and many lives were lost on both the ANZAC and Russian sides. The troops finally withdrew in December that year after a latterly successful campaign and few more casualties.
It was seen as a triumph as it kick-started what has since been known as the ‘ANZAC spirit’ – an Australian ideology based on the friendships forged and bravery displayed by the forces despite their immeasurable suffering.

A mini guide to ANZAC Day – how do we celebrate?

ANZAC Day is much like Remembrance Day here in the UK with prayer, church services, ceremonies and parades held down under and in other countries, towns and cities.

It’s common in Australia to mark the occasion with a ‘gunfire breakfast’ – a stiff drink of coffee with rum – following the commemorative service.

The fourth verse of the poem ‘The Ode’ – whose real name is actually ‘For the Fallen’ – which commemorates the ‘forever young’ is usually read aloud and it’s the only day in Australia when certain forms of gambling, namely the coin game ‘two-up’, are allowed in some states.

ANZAC Day around the world – What’s happening in 2013?

Thousands of Australians have paid tribute today by gathering at dawn services around the country – with the main televised event taking place in Canberra.

Veterans young and old, along with their supporters, turned out to pay their respects and raise a toast to all those who bravely fought to protect the country.

Dawn services have also been held at Gallipoli and in France, while London laid on its own dawn, wreath laying and commemorative services at Hyde Park Corner, Whitehall and Westminster Abbey.

Travelling down under? Today’s best australian dollar exchange rate on our platform is 1.4650

The dates are sorted, the flights are booked and it’s just the accommodation to choose. It sounds simple enough but booking a villa abroad can be a bit like taking a stab in the dark.

That’s why Sue Flynn, an accommodation specialist for Turkey, is urging holidaymakers not to be shy when booking online to avoid any potential pitfalls and make sure the property in question ticks all the right boxes.

Sue, who runs Kalkan Magic, a holiday property specialist in Kalkan, has the following advice to anyone embarking on an independent holiday:

1. When booking a villa online, use reputable rental websites such as www.ownersdirect.co.uk or www.holidaylettings.co.uk and make sure you speak with the owner – a quick telephone call is all it needs. You’d be surprised how many people book accommodation with one email then transfer up to £4000 without further ado. Most of the time you’ll be dealing with bona fide owners but it’s not worth taking the risk.

2. It’s also worth striking up a rapport with the owner – this way you may be able to negotiate an earlier check-in or later check-out time. You can also ask more detailed questions and get a feel for the benefits of the location and its facilities. You can also ask the owner advice on favourite restaurants and recommendations for that all important nightcap!

3. Decide whether it’s an apartment you really want or a private villa. Some apartments can still be private but the pool will be shared with some other apartments. Many people prefer the social aspects of this rather than having a private pool but many prefer the privacy too –especially if you’re travelling as a couple and don’t want children around. It’s also worth checking how many other properties share the pool as you don’t want to be struggling for a sunbed early in the morning.

4. If the property owner is booking your airport transfer then check the cost of this – it shouldn’t be a profit-making service. It’s worth asking the question as it’s good to know it’s taken care of. Make sure you have all contact details to hand for your arrival in case of any delays etc.

5. When establishing your price, check if this includes everything like air conditioning
and Wi-Fi.

6. Location is key to a successful holiday stay. If your chosen property is too far to walk to from the town or roads are a bit rocky then you will need to factor in car hire or taxis to your overall holiday price. Ask the exact location and walking distances and if it is easily located in the dark.

7. Check the security. It’s easy to be blasé when you’re on holiday but it’s sensible to check if there are safes available and if the property benefits from a security alarm or additional locks.

8. If travelling with children, check the ease of pool access as you will need to have peace of mind whilst in your accommodation. Also check on pool depths, shallow ends and, if necessary, baby pools.

9. Make sure the property owners give you their full contact details for the UK in case you need to reach them urgently. Also get the contact information of the property managers or whoever is going to meet and greet you on arrival. You should have this before you depart so if necessary you can contact them in an emergency.

10. Finally, a word about money: Ask the owner whether it’s best to take currency or change it there. Also, ask where the best rates are given and how far that is. If you can make your money last longer, you can start thinking about next year!

by Wan Phing Lim

Travelling is a dream for many of us, and when you’ve saved up all that hard-earned cash and are ready to explore the world, you most likely want to know how to get the best bang out of your buck and maximise your experience abroad. From over the years of extensive travelling, I can personally share some of these money-saving tips which will help you know how to save money in Southeast Asia.

How to save Money In South East Asia – My Top 5 Tips.

Look for free events

There are plenty of free events in a city that are not listed in guidebooks and are unknown to visitors. The best way to do this is to read local publications. Cities like Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur have TimeOut editions that will list free concerts, museums and exhibitions. Aside from TimeOut, most also have their own English-language publications, like JUICE and I-S Magazine in Singapore

Major international cities like Bangkok are bound to have English-language publications, where you can browse through for free things to do in the city

Speak to locals and other travellers

I can’t tell you the countless times I have “discovered” a freebie simply by speaking to fellow travellers in a guesthouse or chatting with a local. So be as friendly as possible and talk to the taxi driver, bar owner, ticket man or waiter – and you’ll be surprised to find insider knowledge that you’ll be dying to share with others. Of course, nothing beats having a local friend or contact show you around the best places in town!

Eat at markets and bazaars

In Southeast Asia, markets, bazaars and street stalls are the best places to find cheap and authentic grub. In Singapore, well-known open-air places like Maxwell Food Centre, Amoy Hawker Centre and Tekka Centre in Little India are where you can get a full meal of rice, chicken, soup and a drink for about $5 (that’s a mere £2.50!) The general rule is that air-conditioned places are slightly pricier than al fresco ones.

Eating at food courts like this one in Maxwell, Singapore is one of the best ways to save money and eat authentically (Photo credit to http://www.flickr.com/photos/naterobert/4025497175/ “Maxwell Food Center, Singapore” by Nate Robert CC BY

Travel off-peak

The travel industry is a seasonal industry, and this may seem like a no-brainer, but travelling off-peak will always mean you’re getting more out of your money. This applies to flights, hotels and even public transportation like buses, taxis and subways. In the hotel industry, you’ll find cheaper room rates during low seasons. Just don’t make the mistake of booking a cheap flight to go diving in say, Tioman Island in Malaysia during the monsoon season (November to March), when most resorts are shut and ferries are not operating.

Always ask for discounts

This is most relevant when it comes to markets, from Southeast Asia’s largest one in Chatuchak, Bangkok to the tiny flower market down the road from your hotel. However, I’m not just referring to bargaining in the bazaars. Many retail stores and restaurants in major cities like Singapore, Bangkok and Hong Kong link up with VISA and MasterCard, which offers concessions. Asking for discounts should always come second nature in this part of the world (and don’t worry about looking like a miser – everyone does it!)

Bargaining and asking for discounts is a must at markets in Asia, like this one along Nathan Road in Hong Kong.

Costa Dorada remains one of Europe’s most popular sun, sea and sand destinations for family summer holidays year after year. Dubbed Spain’s ‘Golden Coast’, it boasts miles of golden beaches as far as the eye can see and is a great place to head for a bargain package holiday where there’s plenty to do. If you’re thinking of heading there for a week or two this summer, we’d say go in June or July when it’s hot enough to sunbathe but not overrun with stag weekends and screaming children.

Check out our top 10 favourite things to do on this sunset strip:

1) Glass-bottomed catamaran trip from Salou to Cambrils

As soon as you arrive on the Costa Dorada, take a walk along the waterfront where you’ll notice catfish swimming around the yachts. The water is turquoise and amazingly clear for a resort which once attracted a bad reputation for dirty beaches. There are no dirty beaches here anymore, however, and the water is a great feature to base your stay around. To see more marine life, the best way is to take a glass-bottomed boat from Salou to Cambrils, which is absolutely stunning. From Cambrils, you can take a leisurely stroll back to Salou’s centre – which is really the hub of the activity – stopping at the odd bar for a glass of vino along the way.

2) Kayaking off the coast of Cambrils

Cambrils is an excellent spot for water sports and it’s really easy to hire equipment from the local club which has an excellent couple of kids’ pools and a seafood restaurant fitting for more discerning foodies. Kayaking on the open sea off the coast of Cambrils will only set you back a few Euros. If you’re a little nervous, instructors are available to partner up with you in these two-seater plastic vessels, which are great fun. Small sailing boats are also available to hire but watch out as you’re sharing the waves with some of the larger catamarans and passenger ferries. Even in July, the Mediterranean sea is a little cold to fall in. For the more intrepid, though, wild swimming is a must!

3) PortAventura Theme Park

If you have kids, PortAventura Theme Park and the new, adjoining Cariba Aquatic Park should be the main focus of your stay. The theme park is like the Spanish Disneyworld and is split into different ‘worlds’ for your exploration – although the main characters you’ll find here are the oddly dated Woody Woodpecker and Betty Boop. The park is home to the steepest log flume and tallest rollercoaster – aptly named the Shambhala after a retreat in the Himalaya – in Europe and you’ll need at least a couple of days here to cover any sort of ground as the queues can be fairly huge in peak season. Expect to get wet and wild and, most of all have fun, but make sure you buy theme park tickets online before you travel to save as much as £100 for a family of four.

4) Platja dels Llenguadets (aka ‘the beach’), Salou

All the beaches on the Costa Dorada are stunning and safe but the best one to avoid the crowds is Platja dels Llenguadets – the beach the locals use, according to some. It’s a nice haven for a relaxed day at the beach without having to fight for space on the sand, plug your ears from screaming children or being lampooned in the face by inflatables.

5) Sightseeing in Tarragona

Tarragona is a beautiful town steeped in Roman history – even more so than Rome itself. It’s no more than an hour’s walk from Salou or a quick taxi ride away which will cost you in the region of 10 to 12 Euros. It’s a little more ‘Spanish’ than Salou, which has an undeniable British quarter, and, set higher up, enjoys gorgeous views of both the Roman amphitheatre and the glistening coast. There are plenty of cultural things to see and do and buses run between the town, Salou and Cambrils regularly.

6) Reus market

Budget airlines have only recently started flying from the UK to Reus in the last couple of years but it’s actually closer than Barcelona at just around 15 minutes from Salou. It’s a lively market town, the home of the late Gaudi (who has a museum dedicated to his art and architecture just off the main square) and well worth a morning or afternoon’s visit. The market is a great way to pick up cheap souvenirs and fruit to take back to your hotel room – particularly if you’re self catering.

7) Shopping in Barcelona

Barcelona is much more cosmopolitan than any of these touristy towns and, therefore, is a great shopping destination while you’re there – especially if you’re into designer labels. It’s full of chic brasseries and steak houses with underground parking – great if you plan to hire a car for the trip. Otherwise, the best way is to take the train. It’s cheap (around eight Euros one way) and easy and only takes around an hour-and-a-half.

8) Stop-over in Valencia

Valencia is easily accessible from Tarragona – either by car, bus or train and will take around three hours so it’s a good idea to set off early in the morning for this trip or plan a one-night stop-over. The third largest metropolitan area in Spain, Valencia is a hive of activity – especially with its port being the fifth busiest container port in Europe. The city was founded as a Roman colony in 138BC and, as such, is one of Europe’s most popular visitor destinations with its museums, cathedral and Llotja de la Seda monument, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s great for arty, bohemian types who love a spot of culture.

9) Aquapolis Water Park

Aquapolis is the area’s foremost water park with dozens of chutes, inflatables and individual pools. It’s also home to the Dolfinarium, which puts on daily dolphin and sea lion shows and is just a short walk from the centre of Salou in Platja la Pineda. Tickets are typically between 22 and 25 Euros and a visit will take up no more than a few hours of your day – another MUST for the kids on the trip!

10) Aquum Spa at Platja la Pineda

This indoor pool and spa is great for a bit of rejuvenation but, be warned, as with most Spanish indoor pools, you’ll need to wear an unsightly swimming cap! The indoor and outdoor pools enjoy varying temperatures with in-built hydro-massage jets and Jacuzzis for a spot of feel-good lounging. Upstairs is a VIP club for adults only with a series of plunge pools, state-of-the-art sun beds, scented steam room and more.

Some useful resources

Don’t forget to compare travel money before you travel as you’ll save up to 10% online when looking for the best euro exchange rates

Forget everything you thought you knew about Cuba – including gun toting ‘Johnny Tapia’ type drug barons wielding fat havanas, Fidel Castro as an out-and-out historical bad guy and residents fleeing bad conditions by boat to Miami – because this Caribbean island is one of the most misconstrued destinations in Latin America.

It’s the largest land mass in the Caribbean Sea – and a beautiful location at that – but it’s marred by absurd and sinister myths based on what we’ve seen in the movies and thanks, in part, to the media.

Of course, it’s turbulent past plays a part and not everything’s rosy but perhaps it’s time we woke up and smelled the coffee of the REAL Cuba – the one which makes a super cool, switched on and safe summer holiday destination, which could really do with a huge tourism surge to help its economy and many of its people out of hardship. Trust us, there’s nowhere else like it in the world.

Check out our trilogy of super-cool reasons to holiday there this year as we try to banish some of the crazier myths of a country that’s home to Bacardi Rum, the cigarillo and some of the friendliest people in the world…

Reason#1 – The very essence of Cuba is its people. Despite prolific hardship in many parts of the country, its residents are incredibly friendly, family orientated and happy – turning to song and dance at every turn as part of their culture. And while it would be ridiculous to suggest there’s no crime, reported crime rates are low and incidents tend to be of petty theft borne out of food poverty rather than sexual or violent acts. The Cubans love children so you’ll find a whole host of safe and fun venues, activities and foods geared up for them.

Reason #2 – Cuba is home to some of the most beautiful, white sandy beaches in the world but its climate isn’t as scorching as you might think. While you’ll rarely find it cold, temperatures only really rise between 21 degrees in January to a non-extreme opposite end of the scale at 27 degrees in July – making it comfortable for families with young children and anyone who struggles to sight-see and stay out in extreme heat. It’s tropical but with welcome trade winds. One of the highlights of its gorgeous coastline is its portfolio of some of the best dive sites in the world thanks to its unspoilt, warm clear waters in which you can expect to see a wide range of marine wildlife including different species of turtle. This activity, combined with bearable temperatures on the beach, means families can relax and play while mum or dad takes to the waves for a spot of scuba diving, speed boat driving, windsurfing or kayaking. Surprisingly, there are no plants or animals – marine or otherwise – which are poisonous or lethal to humans.

Reason #3 – Cuba is steeped in architectural and archaeological history as well as being home to nine different UNESCO World Heritage Sites so there’s no shortage of things to do for a cultured holiday. Dubbed ‘El Cocodrilo’ by the Cubans as it’s said to resemble a crocodile from the air, the country was founded by Christopher Columbus in 1492 after the explorer initially thought he had discovered India. It’s now the most populated country in the entire Caribbean – flanked by four other main groups of islands: the Carnaguey, Canarreos, Jardines de la Reina and Colorados – and is just hours from mainland America. It’s the 17th largest island in the world and the most inhabited country in the Caribbean. It’s possible to fly from Cuba to some of the smaller islands for a day trip to give you a broader picture of the Caribbean’s diversity but bear in mind that domestic flights can be few and far between so it pays to plan this in advance.

Some myths and FACTS:

Myth – Financial hardship has given rise to a prolific Cuban sex industry

FACT: There are no red light districts in Cuba but there IS fantastic health care provision, sex education and effective birth control. In fact, Cuba has the lowest number of HIV cases in Latin America with less than 3,000 reported each year. Cubans also have the highest life expectancy in both Latin and North America and are limited to one child per family.

Myth – Cuba is lined by miserable slums

FACT: Very few Cubans live in slums and it’s thought that those who do – or at least appear to – do so for the tourists to encourage hand-outs. The majority of Cubans who once lived in shanty towns now reside in Spanish style apartments and are provided for by the state. Old Havana is the only real ‘slum’ to be found in Cuba, which is actually very pretty and a pleasure to visit.

Myth: Crime is rife in Cuba with police on every corner

FACT: While there is some crime in Cuba, it’s not prevalent and where police officers are seen on the beat, it’s normally as a precaution and to help tourists feel safe. Perhaps one of the most surprising security measures taken by Cuban authorities is its strict Internet policy. Very few people in Cuba are given permission to use the Internet and offenders are subject to a five-year jail term.

Myth: Cuba is really expensive

FACT: Like anywhere, there are deals to be had and inherent ways to get ripped off. Cuban Pesos, for example, can be ordered online in advance – good practise which will, undoubtedly, save you money. You’ll find larger cities, such as the capital, Havana, more expensive than the smaller towns and suburbs and restaurants and bars geared up for tourists will, of course, charge more than those aimed at the locals.

For more myth-busting, check out I Am My Own Reporter – a blog by Glen Roberts, a worldly philosopher au fait with the Americas and who doesn’t shy away from telling it like it is when it comes to human rights abuse, Castro, Latin American slums and the fabled Cuban sex industry.

Paris has few secrets these days – most of its myths, monuments and underground passageways have already been exposed, explored and written about more than a million times.

Yet the French capital still has that certain je ne sais quoi which makes it one of the most captivating and frequently visited cities in the world – and it’s not dubbed Europe’s romance capital for nothing.

Believe it or not, there are still some secrets to unlock if you look hard enough – and, if you haven’t already stayed, a room at the Secret de Paris boutique hotel is one of them.

This relatively new hotel sits on Rue de Parme, just a few streets from Montrematre’s Moulin Rouge and a stone’s throw from the Metro at Place de Clichy.

Its exterior is so understated that you could be forgiven for walking past it. There are no neon lights, no pretentious artwork and no outlandish claims of perfection.

During my trip, I eventually stumbled upon it down a darkened street off the main square and soon discovered that it couldn’t be more apt for a pair of lovebirds on a weekend break to Paris.

I was charmed by its stylish interior and by its front of house staff, which couldn’t have been more helpful on my first – and very wet – weekend in Paris in a long time.

But the real luxury lay in the rooms – each of them themed to reflect the best of the City of Light.
Eiffel, Moulin Rouge, Opera Garnier, Trocadero, Musee d’Orsay and Atelier d’Artiste themed boudoirs conjure up an undeniable atmosphere and had me in no doubt of the city’s artistic charms.

My room had all the hallmarks of a Parisian love nest and all the staples for a 48-hour retreat.

Sadly, my lover couldn’t make it, but my friend was more than happy to take his place for the night by occupying the right-hand side of the bed.

I slept against an Eiffel Tower backdrop, complete with faux metal-look nuts and bolts – or at least I would’ve done had my best friend not snored from dusk till dawn and consumed most of the bed.

That’s why Secret de Paris is best enjoyed with a lover or, if you’re travelling with friends or business associates, in a room of your own.

The rooms are compact and cosy and ours had a shattered glass effect-encased bathroom which is, inevitably, see-through unless you get the lighting just right.

Typically for me, I found out the hard way and at the peril of the poor porter who delivered our luggage and probably got an eyeful more than he bargained for.

But, for the ambience savvy, there are actually four light settings to create the perfect mood and avoid any bare-bottomed mishaps.

I could go on and on about how the power showers are amazing and how the lavender-infused steam room with twinkling French flag-coloured lights will be the best you’ve ever experienced (which you also get entirely to yourselves if you book 30 minutes ahead at reception) but, instead, I’ll leave you with the above picture of one of the rooms in what could possibly be Paris’s best-kept ‘Secret’ and a run-down of a few things you might want to do if you can actually tear yourselves away from the bedroom:

• Breakfast at Landemaine Rodolphe Patisserie & Boulangerie
You can’t travel to the Trinite quarter without paying a visit to the Landemaine Rodolphe Patisserie and Boulangerie on Rue de Clichy – just a few steps from Secrets de Paris. The coffee shop-come-bakery is stocked with so many pretty pastries, milles feux, croissants and macaroons that you could end up just buying the lot and heading back to your room – although you might find that the old adage ‘les yeux plus gros que le ventre’ comes into play.

• A stroll down Pigalle Place
A short walk from Secrets de Paris takes you to the notorious sex district that is Place Pigalle. This street is best pounded by long-time lovers who are comfortable enough in each other’s company to laugh at the visual assault which inevitably ensues. There are so many tongue-in-cheek X-rated adventures to be had, including a look around the Musee d’Erotisme which, be warned, isn’t for the faint hearted!

• Lunch at Fuda
The Fuda Chinese restaurant at 63 Rue de Clichy serves up all the usual Eastern delicacies as well as a frogs-legs- in-spicy-sauce dish. It has a great, friendly atmosphere and is really popular with the locals.

• Afternoon drinks at Le Chat Noir
This is a pretty funky brasserie which is popular with young, gay Parisians. It’s a great place to sit and enjoy a few well-earned al fresco glasses of wine as you watch the world go by. You’ll find the uber-trendy bar, which even has unisex toilets, on Place Pigalle.

• Dinner at Le Mont Liban
My piece de resistance of discovery on this particular trip was Le Mont Liban – a Lebanese restaurant on 42 Boulevard des Batignolles. You’ll find that cocktails, carefully-marinated chicken and cous cous are the order of the day.

• Cabaret at the Moulin Rouge
For this you’ll need to head back to Place Pigalle and splash out but, trust me, it’s well worth it. Expect loud music, elaborate feathered costumes and all the fun of the fair.

Perhaps the best bit, however, is that Secret de Paris is only one of a number of themed hotels in the City of Light which are geared towards lovers. There are more hotels of this description in Paris than in any other European country. Just check out the competition…
