MyTravelMoney Mystery Shop data is collected in real time on August 26th from 10:30am-10:45am

Key Findings

Keep calm and buy your holiday money online!

Unless you see several exchange bureaus all competing side by side, airports are the least desirable place to change your money with markups as high as 10%.

High Street banks will advertise ‘0% commission,’ however they do take a chunk of your cash to keep for themselves.

Shopping for holiday money can be done the smart way! Shop online, compare rates and save money.

Co-Founder at MyTravelMoney Daniel Abrahams comments:

“Online travel money suppliers can save you up to 60 Euros on your 600 Pound transfer. That is a lot of money that people should have in their pocket. Not with the airport bureaus, high street bureaus and high street banks! No matter who you’ll be exchanging money with on your next holiday, be smart and don’t fall for deceiving gimmicks like ‘No Fees’.”

Maximize your holiday money and purchase it online, with markups as low as 1%!

Banks and airport exchange bureaus will try to get you with their marketing gimmicks, such as ‘No Fees.’ Don’t be fooled!

Currency converting specialists are your new best friends. They’ll help you stay as close to the market rate as they can and avoid markups as high as 10%.

The best indication of the value of a purchase comes from the exchange rates proximity to the market rate. The closer the rate is, the more you get for your buck.

Co-founder of MyTravelMoney Stevan Litobac comments:

“Once you know that you want your exchange rate to be as close to the market rate, you start to research. Once you research, it becomes obvious that online is the place to look for the best deals for your holiday money. Online you find markups as low as 1%-2%. That’s a save not worth missing out on!”

Economic crisis or not, there is one group of people who always seem to escape a downturn – the rich and famous. And when the rich and famous take a holiday, they really do it in style.

Whether you simply want to tread the same beach as your favourite movie star or you really are set on stalking them for the next two weeks, here is our guide to the top 10 celebrity holiday haunts.

Hawaii is one of the most popular celebrity holiday destinations and it is also the home state of President Obama. Here you might expect to rub suntanned shoulders with the likes of Kanye West, Britney Spears, Will Smith and Cameron Diaz. These stars and many more have all stayed in Aloha in recent months so you have a very good chance of a celebrity run in.

Trust is defined as: a reliance on the integrity, strength, ability and surety. Now take a moment and think about the last time you booked a holiday and decided to change your money at the airport bureau or at the bank. Do you recall how many Euros you got to your Pound? Do you recall what the real exchange rate was? Most likely you don’t, and the reason for this is because you trusted the man sitting behind the glass window, looking back at you with a warm smile. When you approached his desk you saw the red flashing lights, ‘0% Commission’ or ‘No Fees,’ and you felt those feelings of surety.

Now we hate to be the bearer of bad news so we’ll break it to you gently. Rather than trusting this new friend, it is best to remain inquisitive and be smart about your money! 0% Commission is nothing more than a marketing gimmick that is used to lure you in with those sweet feelings of trust. You saw it and immediately went starry eyed! We don’t blame you but we’ve decided that we want to help. Now although we at MyTravelMoney are an internet service, we wanted to hit the streets and hear the voice of the people who are purchasing travel money. We also wanted to help unveil the truth behind behind these commission slogans so that people like you don’t get duped as summer approaches and your next holiday is in the queue.

Team MyTravelMoney set out on a beautiful day to see what the public can tell us about their experiences with exchange bureaus. We left our offices with a clear mission in mind, to expose the truth and educate as many people as possible about this sham! We immediately hit the streets and began questioning tourists about how they bought their holiday money; many didn’t even realize how much money they had lost due to exchange commissions. Most of the people we asked purchase their travel money at airports, which generally take the highest commission from travelers. What people don’t realize is that at airports, the rates are generally about 10% more than the actual exchange rate. -When banks and exchange bureaus state that they take no commission, they really mean that they manipulate the exchange rate to be higher, and they take no physical commission from the transaction. However, all the extra money that was collected at a higher exchange rate is in turn, a commission of some sort.

There were a few huge takeaways from our day out. First off, people are unaware of these marketing tricks, and often are falling victim to them. Secondly, people are excited to learn about this and eager to save. We spoke with a woman by the name of Sarah who was traveling with her son and husband. Sarah shared with us that this would be the last holiday where she waited to purchase holiday money at the airport. She emphasized that there are more important things she’d like to spend her money on, like a dinner out with her family. YES! This is what we’re talking about. In addition, we met loads of savvy travelers who are ahead of the game and purchasing their holiday money online where they can, as they would say, “have more options and more control.”

After much debate over budgets and cuts, the Republic of Ireland announced yesterday that they would be cutting their air tax in April 2014. After having a very apparent negative effect on inbound and outbound travel in the Republic for some time, the €3 air travel tax has now been removed by the Irish Government after a long discussion on Budget Day. A spokesman for the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) has welcomed the move for the air travel industry in Ireland saying, “Passenger numbers at Dublin Airport have increased by one million over the past 12 months and we expect Cork Airport to return to growth next year“.

However, it appears that Northern Ireland do not approve of the new cut, reasoning that it could have a negative impact on tourism. A spokeswoman for Belfast International Airport has stated, “Any tax or regulation prevailing in Northern Ireland which makes our gateways less attractive than those across the border is entirely retrograde with regard to economic development. Northern Ireland is ‘peripherality personified’, tucked away at the north of an island, off an island, off a continent“.

With Air Passenger Duty in Northern Ireland currently standing at £13, it may well be the case that tourism to the country will take a negative hit. On another note, the new Budget has stated a total of €2.5bn worth of tax and spending cuts including a 10cent increase on Tobacco duty and a 50cent rise on wine duty.

Cited as ‘an absolutely sickening and despicable attack of appalling brutality’ by David Cameron, the shootings in Nairobi on Saturday have left at least 4 Britons dead. Unfortunately, as the Westgate Mall is cleared, the Foreign Office has stated that more bodies may be discovered during the operation. The attack has been initiated by the Somalian al-Shabab Militant group, who announced that it has comes as a response to current Kenyan military operations in Kenya.

David Cameron tweeted earlier today, “I’m cutting short a visit to Balmoral to return to Downing St to chair Cobra late this afternoon, dealing with the Kenya terror attacks.” COBRA is an acronym for Cabinet Office Briefing Room A, which refers to the area of organisation for a committee held to discuss and co-ordinate crisis’ responses and determine actions to be taken. Ed Miliband, Labour Party leader has said the “terrible attack reminds us all of the continuing need for vigilance from our security services and ongoing international cooperation in the battle against terrorism”.

Aside from the shooting attacks, al-Shabab claims that over 36 people are being held hostage, though this number remains unconfirmed. In a previous cobra meeting, it was confirmed that a rapid deployment team was to be sent to Nairobi to offer support and aid. The situation remains at a present stand-off between the Kenyan Military and persisting al-Shabab attackers.

The Eurostar has offered its high-speed railway service across the Channel Tunnel since 1994 and has been regarded as one of the cheapest and most reliable transport methods crossing the sea. However, after a recent delayed service from Avignon to London, it has come to travellers’ attention that perhaps, the standards of the Eurostar are not quite what they once were.

Passengers not seated together and out of order toilets seemed to have caused problems before the train even set off. Unfortunately, this was only the beginning of the problematic journey; the buffet cart offered next to no food with staff attempting to justify the problem by stating that the food usually gets sold out on the outward journey.

After quizzing other passengers, it has also been found that standards have been deteriorating over the years, from minor occurrences such as stained carpets to cardboard croissants to non-existent amenities such as a Wi-Fi connection. A spokesperson for the Eurostar mentioned that ‘Unfortunately on this service, a combination of a problem with the loading and the high demand over a long journey meant there was a shortage of products available, this is being addressed by our catering team.”

It seems that the Eurostar will need to up its game in order to compete with the recent grant for the ‘Deutsche Bahn’ to operate across the Channel Tunnel from 2016 onwards. With the german competitor having excelled in its field more many years, proving high quality standards time and time again, it will be necessary for the Eurostar to ensure excellence is achieved and quality is not compromised, or the Eurostar will soon become a thing of the past, lost in outdated methods of transport.
