Ryanair schedules extra flights for Champions League Final

Airline strikes a chord with Chelsea fans

Say what you like about Ryanair (www.ryanair.com), which has been blasted by the Sunvil blog this week, but it’s the only budget airline to raise its game by laying on extra flights for the Champions League Final.

Whether you love or loathe the controversial airline operator, it’s bound to be popular with Chelsea fans this month after officials announced a number of extra scheduled flights between London Stansted and Memmingen ahead of the Chelsea v Bayern Munich match on May 19.

Although not cheap – starting at around £467 return – the extra seats will mean more Chelsea fans able to attend the match and, judging by the messages of support flooding in, as reported in The Guardian, it looks the UK team will need all the support it can get.

But this isn’t the first time Ryanair has laid on extra flights for the beautiful game – or for UK fans for that matter. Europe’s largest low fares airline also scheduled special flights following the Euro Draw, adding two additional outbound flights from Dublin to Tallinn.

The question is, however, has Ryanair scored any extra points among UK-based travellers for its support of the biggest match in the club’s history or, as Sunvil might suggest, is it just further cashing in?
